DESCRIPTION:In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month\, join us October 27 at 10 a.m. for a free viewing of the excellent documentary Private Violence. \n“Private Violence is a documentary film and audience engagement campaign that explores a simple\, but deeply disturbing fact of American life: the most dangerous place for a woman in America is her own home. Every day in the US\, at least four women are murdered by abusive (and often\, ex) partners. The knee-jerk response is to ask: “why doesn’t she just leave?” Private Violence shatters the brutality of this logic. Through the eyes of two survivors – Deanna Walters\, a mother who seeks justice for the crimes committed against her at the hands of her estranged husband\, and Kit Gruelle\, an advocate who seeks justice for all women – we bear witness to the complicated and complex realities of intimate partner violence. Their experiences challenge entrenched and misleading assumptions\, providing a lens into a world that is largely invisible; a world we have locked behind closed doors with our silence\, our laws\, and our lack of understanding. Kit’s work immerses us in the lives of several other women as they attempt to leave their abusers\, setting them on a collision course with institutions that continuously and systematically fail them\, often blaming victims for the violence they hope to flee. The same society that encourages women to seek true love shows them no mercy when that love turns dangerous. DESCRIPTION:Wings of Hope Hospice is sponsoring a Death Café.  This event is a part of a growing worldwide phenomenon where people\, often strangers\, gather to talk about death and eat good food. \nDeath Café is scheduled for Tuesday\, October 22\, from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Wings of Hope Hospice office conference room located at 530 Linn St. in Allegan\, across from Ascension – Allegan Hospital. \nThe objective of Death Café is to ‘increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives’.  Death Café was founded by Jon Underwood in England in 2011 based on the work of Bernard Crettaz\, a Swiss sociologist.  Lizzy Miles was the first person to offer Death Café in the U.S. \nIndividuals may participate according to their level of comfort.  The conversation will be thoughtful\, respectful and confidential.  The event is free and complimentary hors d’oeuvres and desserts will be served.  To attend\, please RSVP by calling the Wings of Hope Hospice office by October 15th at 800-796-2676 or 269-686-8659.   Seating is limited.

DESCRIPTION:With the shared mission of providing reliable and timely information\, as well as representing the well-being of our community and local economy\, the Allegan District Library\, in partnership with the Allegan Area Chamber of Commerce and the Allegan County News\, will host a formal question-and-answer forum in advance of the November 5th election of City Council members. \nThis is your opportunity to meet the candidates\, learn about their positions on relevant issues\, and to measure their demeanor and competence when addressing those issues in public.  The forum will include introductions and opening position statements followed by the delivery of prepared and audience questions.  Each candidate will be permitted to answer or decline each of the questions.  The event will follow a forum protocol and is not a debate.  The forum will be streamed to Facebook Live.  Like the City Council roles\, the forum will be strictly independent of sectarian affiliation\, will be non-partisan\, and non-denominational in its approach to the question and answers. \nTo submit a question for consideration in advance of the forum\, email it to Library Director Ryan Deery at rdeery@alleganlibrary.org. Please be aware that time constraints and other factors will determine which and how many audience questions are utilized.

The film will be preceded by The Tantalizing Fly\, a 1919 cartoon by animation pioneer\, Max Fleischer. Admission is $.50 — the price of the first ticket sold at the Regent Theatre in 1919. \nIn addition to appreciating the past with a slideshow\, self-guided tours\, and a brief keynote\, enjoy the present with the debut of new concession stand candy\, merchandise on sale in the lobby\, and fundraising efforts for future projects.
