Goodwill Industries of Southwestern Michigan was founded in 1956 to help advance employment capabilities and opportunities through education, training, and career services for people with employment barriers.  Our initial program resulted in the familiar Goodwill retail store, a venture which has provided productive employment for hundreds of individuals since inception.   Goodwill is one of the world’s largest and most successful providers of employment and training services.  In the Goodwill family of organizations, someone is placed in employment every 53 seconds of every business day.  Over this time, we have worked to develop and refine additional beneficial services: Industrial Services, Custodial Services, and Rehabilitation Services.

Revenues from our Business Services and the Goodwill Retail Stores provide the income from which wages and operating expenses are paid. In the end, these funds are channeled back into the communities of Kalamazoo, Allegan, Berrien, Van Buren, St. Joseph and Cass counties – in the form of taxes paid and the purchase of goods and services by our employees.  Goodwill provides support to families wishing to exit poverty for 20 years through Life Guides, a program supported by store/manufacturing revenue and community partners.  In Allegan, Goodwill is a vital partner with Sylvia’s Place, providing participants with the necessary furniture, household, and clothing items needed to make a new start.

Goodwill practices continuous improvement throughout our organization.  Over the course of our history, we have worked to develop and refine additional beneficial services including Industrial Services, Custodial Services, and Rehabilitation Services.  All our divisions are committed to providing the best possible service in the most effective and efficient way possible.
