Edwy Reid Building featured on 2016 Allegan Historical Sites Ornament

The Allegan Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to feature the Edwy Reid Building on its 2016 Allegan Historical Sites Ornament.  The ornaments are still in production, but will be available no later than December 9 at Allegan Community Pharmacy, the Allegan Area Chamber of Commerce, and other locations throughout town.

The Commercial Italianate constructed building was built in 1899 and was home to The Allegan Gazette.  Edwy Reid was a founding partner of the Gazette, Allegan County’s first newspaper.

Today, most Allegan residents know the building as the Kyes Building, home of John and Valerie Kyes’ Insurance Agency for more than 30 years.  During that time period, the Allegan Area Chamber of Commerce leased office space at that location on at least two occasions; first around 1980 after Judi Miller’s Wooden Indian Gift and Framing Shop closed, and then again from 2008 until the Chamber’s move to the City of Allegan Welcome Center earlier this year.  Of the building, Chamber Director, Tim Perrigo, said, “While the move to the Welcome Center has been great, I truly miss the Kyes Building.  It has such character, warmth, and soul.  It has been impeccably maintained by John and Valerie with a commitment to, and passion for, the building.  It was an honor and a pleasure to be their tenant.”
